Well I’m the same age, I don’t think we are the norm at all, haha!
You’re right - but impressions happen for reasons!

I appreciate the efforts of trying to make 30 songs!!! Now that I think I wanna do it on a paper just for fun too.
Cool to know your list!
I figured I’d take a stab at making a list so here it is, in no particular order:
Monty Got A Raw Deal
Walk Unafraid
The Great Beyond
Drive
Find The River
Let Me In
Turn You Inside Out
Fall On Me
Old Man Kensey
Wendell Gee
Hi Stella, you’re clearly already a superstar on this site. : )
One reason I think REM is not getting the credit they deserve is that they need a dedicated station on SiriusXM. Elvis, Bruce, the Beatles, Pearl Jam, etc. have dedicated stations, and they seem like a great vehicle for regularly turning out new content from the archives, such as old concerts and demos, plus you build up a history with insider interviews and insider playlists, etc., etc.
I’m thinking of starting a threat on this to try to make it happen, but REM fans aren’t generally joiners!
All the best
Sing for the submarine
Until the day is done
Living well is the best…
I believe
Be Mine
Harbourcoat
New test leper
Wolves lower
Drive
Actually “Aftermath” isn’t so bad although I’m almost embarrassed to admit that anything off of Around the Sun is a best of
I’ve previously really enjoyed your videos on Husker Du, post punk and shoegaze but consider REM my specialist subject so I’ll be sure to watch.
Mine:
But tbh it changes every day
I just caught some of the BBC’s Question Time (a current affairs panel show) this evening and the end (jokey) question to the public audience was what song would suit where we are at the moment: Heaven knows I’m miserable now (the Smiths), Don’t leave me this way (Communards) Help! (The Beatles) amongst others came up but also Losing My Religion. Interessant!
@StellaLi1234 curious to know what you think now that R.E.M. is back in the spotlight due to The Bear and more recently, the band’s pick of their top 40 songs.
As a nearly lifelong fan it’s not something I’m overly concerned with but I still find the issue of their legacy a fascinating topic. One of my younger friends recently discovered R.E.M. via The Bear and loves “Half A World Away.” Cool that it’s more of a deep album track but also one of my personal over all favorites, especially from that time period. I don’t know that she’s quite ready or ever will make the deep dive into their catalog and history, just the fact that the song is on her radar at all is a positive to me. It also goes to show the role a TV show can play in introducing an artist to an audience that may not have discovered them any other way.
On the topic of them being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the amount of publicity it’s received, especially in light of the four original members performing together last night for the first time since 2007 would seem to suggest that any questions regarding their legacy are moot. Then again, I could be biased due to my fandom. Even if I’m off here, I think it’s safe to say they haven’t been forgotten. Will it lead to some sort of resurgence in sales of their catalog or increased streams? I have no idea but this level of recognition hasn’t gone unnoticed. It’s also readily apparent just how important this particular accolade is to the band, to be honored for their songwriting.
My grandson is proudly sporting his bright green 21st Century rocket babygro ( though he has no clue who REM are!) Not to worry, I have plenty of images around the house (the Anton Corbijn photograph poster, various others) which won’t go unnoticed…eventually. Plus I wear my REM baseball cap and T shirts when leading walks- I get “looks”. All this can’t be dissimilar to my father’s hand me down of e.g. Bix Beiderbecke music.
