Picking up some strong Bow Wow Wow / Altered Images vibes from this one. I love it.

So we’ve had a change of government (Billie Joe Armstrong at the Isle of Wight Festival this year thought we had “our shit together over here” ?!). We’ll see. Maybe they’ll listen to this from Manchester band James first no.1 album (their 18th!). I love that front man Tim Booth says its success is “anti ageist” (he’s 64 same as me and a certain other singer we know). The video is reminiscent of REM’s Bad Day, no?

The synthesizer seems to be coming back into fashion…maybe it adds a bit of nostalgia for certain age groups and appeals to new ones? Mind you, people like Hans Zimmer write music which is timeless and universal in appeal. Sounds like a debate topic!

Been loving this one. This, despite giving his previous album (Boat Songs) several spins with nothing really grabbing me. Funny how it works that way sometimes. The new one, Manning Fireworks is out September 6th.

I saw Pixel Grip here in Atlanta back in March and met them at the merch table. They are really cool and pleasant folks in person. This brand new song is a total banger, especially when it kicks into overdrive around the 3:25 mark.

The opener from the new Hamish Hawk album. The album’s great, and I’m a little obsessed with this song right now.

This is where I am right now. Could only find one video and the sound quality was bad. What a great song.

This song is hilarious. Apparently the plan was to make a song that sounded like Prince. I don’t think they’ve done that, but it’s as good as anything by the Purple One. If you listen to the lyrics, it’s pretty dirty. That’s a Prince thing, right?

This just randomly came on my Spotify. Thought the name Colin Hay rings a bell. It’s the lead singer from Men At Work! Love this!

I haven’t heard this record in years, was listening in the car today. This song by The Lemonheads from my 1996 playlist.

I’ve never really taken the time to dig deeper into them but I have fond memories of a local band (the Surreal McCoys) that used to cover this, the Cure, R.E.M., etc back in the mid-90s at a local dive bar where more familiar cover songs were usually the order of the day (Buffett, Eagles, Skynyrd, etc.). Also, upon looking this up just now, I learned the Lemonheads were covering it themselves.

I’m not sure why this song fell out of my memories (if you’ve seen the movie Inside Out I’m imagining the little memory guys pulling it off the shelf for a laugh) but it’s a good song!

Also proof I will forgive the “world/girl” rhyme if the chord change is cool enough.

Absolutely love this song and feel like there’s a huge 90s R.E.M. influence (especially Automatic, the keyboard sound really reminds me of New Orleans Instrumental no. 1)
