So, how’s it going

Today the weather was amazing in LA, so after I went to the gym it was very hard to motivate myself to do anything other than sit outside and enjoy it. I have chores to do, so have to actually do productive things tomorrow.

That’s a relief. Reminds me of a situation when I was younger. I set up generic Lego buckets upside down and went to town. Looks like he took it a step up and included cymbals.

I was in a bad place in my head, yesterday.I was trying to stabilize pallets, we have a ratchet set up for that. I couldn’t mentally get past one part. When I was younger, I was constantly made fun of, for my learning disability, so I wouldn’t give up. To give reference only, I was called retarded all the time. Once a math teacher asked why I couldn’t get something, in class.

I was put into a remedial class shortly after.

Found out about 20 years later, I have dyscalcula. I was told by my manager to just walk away, I tried it a couple times more and ended up walking away and someone else finished it. Nobody said anything, but in my head, they considered me a failure and disappointment. The thought probably thought nothing of it. It was probably all in my head…playing on a loop.

I can relate to the pallet story.

I have never been a handyman. When it comes to practical hands-on things, like home repairs and construction, there is something missing in my head. I can write and I can work with computer applications, but I cannot hammer a straight nail into a board to save my life.

I earned a Biology degree from Georgia Tech, and had to take several math-centric engineering physics courses, but I lacked the “engineer’s common sense” that most of my classmates possessed.

Ooh, I had my first one of those for Melissa’s wedding! It was probably just the manicurist I got, but I HATED it and will likely never do it again. I hope yours was good, though!

I have a day off and I’m gonna take it easy. I’m gonna transfer New Adventures in Hi-Fi from lp to mp3. I hope some of the nuisances on the album transfer to mp3. I know some won’t because I’m using digital to record it. I’ll let you guys know how it turns out.

Oh. And I’m gonna work on a Batman puzzle.

I have been slowly reconstructing my digital library over the last month. Our old computer crashed and when I went to pull everything off my external hard drive, I realized it was a mess so I thought - let’s just start over. So, down to the basement to grab the usb record player and start ripping. It’s nice to have way more storage space (old laptop was circa 2013) for lossless files.

You are living the dream! We have a bunch of hard drives where we just keep backing up everything over and over, and I keep saying I’m going to organize the files one of these days.

Well I seem to be here again after over 15 years I see. Quite knackered today, simultaneously avoiding attention but being open to it. Grumpy as I used to be back in the day. Winter remains nasty and the lockdown lift doesn’t yet serve me much as it’s hard to traverse outside.

Considered going for a walk. The sun is out, finally. But it’s super windy. Got in a quick bike ride (peloton not my road bike). Now I’m gonna read. All day.

Considered actually re-organizing the garage, but did not get to it. I rarely get days where I just rest, and it’s such a beautiful day, I just rested.

I scratched my New Adventures in Hi-Fi record and just am feeling like i eff up everything, to be honest…

Last year, I acquired a 7” single of Actors - Post Traumatic Love/Nightlife. Only 300 copies of this debut Actors single were pressed in 2012. (100 clear vinyl, 100 pink vinyl, and 100 black vinyl)

When I put my clear vinyl 7” on the turntable, my needle jumped off of the record, bounced off my mat, and then scratched across the record. Thankfully, no real damage was done, and the single played fine after that, but I put it away and I now just stick to my digital copy when I want to listen to the songs.

Got back from my folks’ today. Dad was in a worse way than they’d led me to believe. Mom’s ok but could use more help than I can offer. It was a good but sad trip. We did manage to groom their collies (neither can lift the big one anymore) and got a few other odds and ends settled. Athens was already in her pretty dusk colors by the time I rolled back in

Today was a “I should do dirty house work” day so mostly that’s using the air blower to dust off balconies and blow the leaves out of the garage. That inevitably leaves me dirty and gross. My parents are visiting this weekend, and I still have tomorrow off though, so not all that bad.

I took hazardous waste to the dump. (“Let’s recycle those shards and get out of here.”) The guy running the disposal drop off was a bit surprised at how many fluorescent tube bulbs I was pulling out of the back of the car. (I didn’t count, but close to 50.) When we bought this house both the basement and a large rec room space had a lot of tube fixtures, which have slowly gone bad over the past decade. I’ve been replacing them with LEDs, which are much better. The old tubes have been accumulating though in various storage closets, and it was finally time to get rid of them. Not really the most exciting day but hey.

I think I spent more time swapping lighting in our new house than anything else. The replacement fixtures for fluorescents are really good though, as are recessed lighting retrofits.

But in LA especially, disposing of fluorescent tubes, ballasts, paint, etc is a pain in the ass.

Hazardous waste drop off is twice a year in my area - 1st Saturday in March and October. Woo.

Meanwhile I had to put out the bin last night in whatever storm Franklin actually amounted to - felt like a Force 9/ 10 or so - and lay awake most of the night with mental images of everyone’s trash blowing all over the cul-de-sac. But… Nope… Nothing… It’s spotless. Either all our bin lids are defying the laws of physics or the trash blew all the way out to the sea.

Re hazardous waste, thank goodness my local recycling centre takes it all year, but here these things are different from local authority to local authority. Hence, when one of my friends in Dublin has hazardous waste, they give it to me and I take care of it here in Wicklow, when I have a large electrical appliance to get rid of I give it to a friend in the South Dublin county council area because they have a specialised recycling centre for that and when I have soft plastics I need recycled, I give it to a friend in the Dublin City Council area because they accept them at her local recycling centre. Also, Wicklow county council accepts soft plastics in the recycling bin, but not at the centre. Like… :face_with_raised_eyebrow:
