A former colleague of mine is stuck in Kyiv, so I’m a bit worried about him here… On the upside, today is Pancake Tuesday, so I had a massive, delicious Quark and apple pancake for dinner, yum!
And as a reply to earlier replies from a few days ago that I saw but can’t find now (sheesh…how tangled can you get?) Penny and Ethan, great to hear you guys remember the arctic circle members! Safely and steadily located in Helsinki and while the winters are a drag it’s absolutely lovely otherwise. I ended up doing a load of music journalism before moving to wine trade following a year in France. A chance of moving on remains still, hunting for new skills but life’s quite good, apart from wars and pandemics…!
is the one you meant I guess?
Heeey Mike! How I used to bother you with all kinds of snenanigans in a verbal form. So höad to hear from you too!
Was that a typo (g->h l->o … sometimes I miss my german keyboard…) or did you plan on putting some Swedish in there?
(yeah google helped me out there…)
’Fraid it’s my iPhone screen to blame here, nothing else! But yes, you did figure it out!
I have my bog standard QWERTY keyboard set to German QWERTZ. 12/10, can’t recommend that highly enough.
I usually don’t bother since my german keyboard died only like 4-5 years ago. Also setting it up on the different VMs and OSes I use is usually not worth the effort since I don’t really need it.
I added it now though öäüß. I actuallz cannot even easilz remember the QWERTZ layout anymore (I kept the y/z typos)
Gotta remember now on that VM: right ctrl and right shift key switches layouts…
That takes me back! I learned to type on a little Swiss Hermes Baby portable typewriter with a QWERTZ keyboard! Boy, was I confused when I had to learn touch typing on an American machine at school.
Well, three out of four ain’t bad. Results from my visit to a ‘plastic surgeon’ yesterday:
I actually had four broken bones in my face one at the base of my eyesocket which will probably heal nicely on its own. We will keep an eye on it.
Another, a maxillary bone (more ‘anterior inferior left maxillary sinus’) which I am told is paper thin and will have to heal on its own.
Another similar bone will have to heal on its own.
Because none of those three are impacting me in anyway unless my left eye decides to move out of position, they can heal themselves and will not be addressed.
I will have my nasal passage address because I don’t want to be struggling for air out of that nostril for the rest of my life. So: surgery, not that complex, popping a bone back into place, and not impacting my life too much.
I can’t go back to Pilates for a month until my ribs heal (broken in three places).
Like I mentioned to Donna @InternetLegend, I don’t do anything halfway. And since I never had really broken ‘real’ bones, I went all the way, from pinky toes to facial fractures.
That sounds horrifically painful! Pilates can wait for your bones to heal. I hope your surgery goes smoothly and that all those other bones start knitting quickly. Now that you’ve had the broken bones experience, no more falling, okay?
Can you choose a new nose if you want one?
Good news on all the others. Especially being able to keep the eye. Like Donna said, pillates can wait and will be there when you’re healed.
First world issues, but…
I love the internet music company/app, Bandcamp, and I have done a lot of business with them over the years. I love buying vinyl records and CDs from bands on the site, because I always get lossless files of the purchases as well, and because the bands get a lot more of the money.
Today, Bandcamp announced that they are joining Epic Games.
“I’m excited to announce that Bandcamp is joining Epic Games, who you may know as the makers of Fortnite and Unreal Engine, and champions for a fair and open Internet.
Bandcamp will keep operating as a standalone marketplace and music community, and I will continue to lead our team. The products and services you depend on aren’t going anywhere, we’ll continue to build Bandcamp around our artists-first revenue model (where artists net an average of 82% of every sale), you’ll still have the same control over how you offer your music, Bandcamp Fridays will continue as planned, and the Daily will keep highlighting the diverse, amazing music on the site. However, behind the scenes we’re working with Epic to expand internationally and push development forward across Bandcamp, from basics like our album pages, mobile apps, merch tools, payment system, and search and discovery features, to newer initiatives like our vinyl pressing and live streaming services.”
In all honesty, I really don’t know enough about the odds and ends to have an educated opinion, but my spider sense tells me that this will not end well.
Nada, as you well know.
I will be happy to be able to breathe normally again. But also I envision in the future someone saying ‘hey what happened to that side of your nose (left front-Al sinuses?)? You really have to stare to see the difference but I see the difference, and I feel the difference with a different amount of air passing through each nostril.
As for Pilates, yes I know. i have to take care of the ribs and Pilates will be there when I get back. My body misses it though. Like anything that becomes a habit my body just looks up at me and says “why?”. I like the torture.
I wish I could be happy for Bandcamp. They want to expand, sure, and I’m sure Epic’s standing up to Apple about payment structures was a big deal for them (as you can’t currently purchase music through the app). But…
This is another reminder that we can’t have good things. That tech companies own too much digital real estate and it’s impossible currently to just exist and be moderately successful. These types of deals have traditionally not ended well. Not to mention that now Tencent (a Chinese company that owns 40% of Epic) has its hands on the biggest indie platform around. This is problematic for me as Tencent also owns stake in Spotify. So… yeah. It’s been an interesting and frustrating day in the indie music world
“We will keep an eye on it.”
Haha. Good to hear things went somewhat well, but ouch.
Learned a little more of World Leader Pretend in lessons today…
It’s Friday. It’s been a long week (they’re all long these days).
Tonight’s sunset, followed by tonight’s drink: an Old Fashioned (that I promptly spilled after I took this pic).
Was helping my girlfriend with her move to a new bigger apartment. We’re not yet moving in together but if things continue like they’ve done for long, it’s just a matter of time. Come next year it’s very likely.
Anyhow, I like to help when people move. It’s like a compound movement of many nice things: you get a workout, see people, get some pizza and some beer. Moving in Finland does not happen without pizza and beer unless you’re hiring a moving company and at this age it really isn’t necessary. Now where did we put that Steinway grand piano…
