And I can hear him
In every footstep’s passing sigh
He goes crazy these nights
Watching heartbeats go by…
And they whisper -
We belong together
- Rickie Lee Jones
And I can hear him
In every footstep’s passing sigh
He goes crazy these nights
Watching heartbeats go by…
And they whisper -
We belong together
We belong to the light, we belong to the thunder
We belong to the sound of the words we’ve both fallen under
Whatever we deny or embrace, for worse or for better
We belong, we belong, we belong together
(Pat Benatar)
Where are you going to, I don’t mind
I’ve killed my world and I’ve killed my time
So where do I go? What will I see?
I see many people coming after me
where are you going to? I don’t mind
If I live too long, I’m afraid I’ll die
So I will follow you wherever you go
If your offered hand is still open to me
Strangers on this road we are on
We are not two, we are one.
The Kinks
With love we sleep
With doubt the vicious circle
Turn and burns
Without you I cannot live
Forgive the yearning burning
I believe it’s time, too real to feel
So touch me now, touch me now, touch me now
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to lust
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to us
Way down the street there’s a light in his place
He opens the door, he’s got that look on his face
And he asks you where you’ve been
You tell him who you’ve seen
And you talk about anything…
Before you slip into unconsciousness
I’d like to have another kiss
Another flashing chance at bliss
Another kiss, another kiss
[The days are bright and filled with pain
Enclose me in your gentle rain
The time you ran was too insane
We’ll meet again, we’ll meet again
The Doors
You can’t go back
Honey that is what they told me
And you know what I think of that
'Cause I’m back here at your side
Were you lonely?
Were you eaten up inside thinking
“If only we’d try”
You can’t go back
A fact that nobody could hold me
So I’ve come back round
Del Amitri
Honey, come back I just can’t stand
Each lonely day’s a little bit longer
Than the last time I held you
Seems like a hundred years ago
Back to his arms and never know
The joy of love that used to taste like
Honey, come back where you belong to only me.
Baby’s got some new rules
Baby said she’s had it with me
There’s a fly in the honey
And baby’s got a baby with me
That’s a part, that’s a part of me
Left me to love
What it’s doing to me
R.E.M.
I was gonna post a very old song called “Honey” about a guy whose beloved wife dies. I always thought the song was maudlin and depressing, so I found a much, much better one. That genre of songs about death and grieving was pretty big for awhile in the 60s. I hated it. Notable exception:
Leader Of The Pack. Great song.
Honey— Bobby Goldsburo
Me In Honey— those geniuses
Leader Of The Pack—-The Shangri-LA’s
You’re Dead. —-Norma. Tanega. ( hilarious)
ETA- This comes kinda close to songs people want played at their funeral. I have a list. It keeps changing though. One that is definitely going to ring out is Find The River. I love it so much it’s tattooed all over my arms, it’s THE song I want to play when I say goodbye to everything.
(I don’t think I’ve ever actually heard “Honey”, but I remember it from Dave Barry’s bad song survey.)
Don’t say a word about what we’re doing
Don’t say nothing, little honey bee
Don’t tell your mama, don’t tell your sister
Don’t tell your boyfriend, little honey bee
(Tom Petty)
You love her
But she loves him
And he loves somebody else
You just can’t win
And so it goes
'Til the day you die
This thing they call love
It’s gonna make you cry
J Geils Band
Honey honey, let me feel it, a-ha, honey honey
Honey honey, don’t conceal it, a-ha, honey honey
Don’t call my doctor
Don’t call my momma
Don’t call my preacher
No, I don’t need it
It’s knowing that this can’t go on forever
Likely one of us will have to spend some days alone
Maybe we’ll get forty years together
But one day I’ll be gone
Or one day you’ll be gone
(Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit)
(I can’t actually listen to this song as it makes me sob, even copying the lyrics here is tough)
(Thinking about this later, it’s sort of the opposite of the “Honey” song. it’s also kind of about his wife dying, but not at all silly/maudlin.)
There’s a time that I remember
When I did not know no pain
When I believed in forever
And everything would stay the same
Now my heart feels like December
When somebody says your name
Cos I can’t reach out to call you
But I know I will one day
Maroon 5
It’s been a long December and there’s reason to believe
Maybe this year will be better than the last
I can’t remember all the times I tried to tell my myself
To hold on to these moments as they pass
And it’s one more day up in the canyons
And it’s one more night in Hollywood
It’s been so long since I’ve seen the ocean
I guess I should
(Counting Crows)
(did someone do this one already? I’m losing track!)
Here’s wishing you the bluest sky
And hoping something better comes tomorrow
Hoping all the verses rhyme
And the very best of choruses, too
Follow all the doubt and sadness
I know that better things are on the way
The Kinks
I took the cannonball down to the ocean,
Across the desert from sea to shining sea,
I rode a ladder that climbs across the nation,
Fifty million feet of earth between the buried and me…
So am I!
All around this chaos and madness
Can’t help feeling nothing more than sadness
Only choice to face it the best I can…
Oh, it’s a pity it’s a shame
To see it all slip away
I’ve seen your way, babe
But never this way
We hold our ground
We don’t kneel
If we go down, we go
Down on our own shield
Jakob Dylan
It’s better to die on your feet than to live on your knees
Oh-oh, the power and the passion
Oh-oh, the temper of the time…
To feel the sexiness, the passion,
The fusion and the fission,
Remember Bruce Springsteen divorced a model
And married a musician!
