This is growing right next to our patio door. It’s something our neighbours planted awhile ago. It turns into a fruit that looks like a greengage plum (pictured ) but I don’t know what would happen if I bit into one, so I don’t. This flower though, is gorgeous. Looking at it for a few minutes it begins to look like a smiling cat face. Stunning.
It’s called passion flower. They produce a fruit (passionfruit) but there are a few varieties of passion flower, and that doesn’t look like an edible one.
Info courtesy of my partner, who’s a botanist.
Wow, thanks and kudos to you and your clever partner. It’s such a beautiful flower. It looks so exotic, would never expect such a thing growing in a London garden. Much appreciated!
Hi Etty yep it’s a passionflower. My Mum had one she was very proud of. Yes when the green “plum” style fruit turns orange you can eat the red seeds inside. But it will need the sun to turn the fruit orange but it’s getting a bit late in the year for that. Maybe it’s not in a sunny spot. Oddly though lots of summer flowers are having a bit of a late autumnal revival in my garden- poppies, wallflowers, begonia, potentilla. Hardy things plants!
