I’ve skirted around the fringes of this universe the past few years but it’s not been until recently that I’ve taken a deeper plunge. Due to a conversation about Julien Baker playing the recent Love Rising concert in Nashville where Phoebe Bridgers was the conduit (I figured my friend had more likely heard of her than Julien, I was correct) I started with Phoebe’s debut album. Due to my mood at the time, it fit perfectly. From there, I was led to her other records as well as the boygenius EP and her band with Conor Oberst, Better Oblivion Community Center. Next, came Julien, and then, Lucy Dacus. I’ve been less taken with Lucy but I’ve also only skimmed the surface with her. I love Phoebe but it’s Julien’s first two albums I haven’t been able to get enough of. I haven’t been all that taken with the third as it is more pop which isn’t really my thing.
The first full length album by boygenius drops today, called The Record. Last night they also released The Film, directed by Kristen Stewart. So far, I’ve only heard the three songs from The Film and “Not Strong Enough.” Later today, I look forward to listening to the album in its entirety. I also recently purchased a ticket to see them in concert which will be my first time seeing any of them live. I can’t wait for that.
