From R.E.M. HQ - “I first met Nando Reis in 2000 when Barrett and I played on one of his solo records, Para Quandoo Arco-Íris Encontrar o Pote de Ouro. Jump forward twenty two years when Barrett and I were invited to Brazil to do an anniversary tour and some recording. Over the space of eighteen months, we recorded a three record set of new originals with Barrett producing.
The record came out September 6th. It’s a record I’m really proud of and can be heard on most streaming platforms (link in bio). It’s called Uma Estrela Misteriosa.”
Update“If you can track down the three record set, including a bonus record, it’s a pretty cool package. I’m loving my time in Brazil! The first show is Friday in Macapa. I’ll be in touch! ~ Peter”
I’m going to see Steve Wynn in Glasgow next week. I guess my hopes that Peter Buck will make a surprise guest appearance are forlorn. Brazil is a ways away. I wonder what Mike Mills is up to next week…
I haven’t listened to any of the Nando stuff yet, but looking forward to diving in.
Latest update from Peter in Brazil from R.E.M. HQ - “I’m sorry to say that I haven’t been quite the tour correspondent that I should be, but I’ve been busy playing music and seeing Brazil. A couple of days ago, I did a recording session with Fernando Nunes, a great player, writer, producer, and arranger here in Brazil. There was a band rehearsing in the same studio. Barrett Martin and I wandered down to watch them. Great band! They are called Tijauana, and they play a crazy mix of ska, heavy rock, reggae and Brazilian folk. Totally great! Or as we say here in Brazil: legal! Their records are up on the streaming platforms, so give them a listen! Or catch them on tour. Off to bus across Brazil in a couple of hours. Wish me luck!”
Spelt or pronounced different on HQ, (Tijauana) I think this is the band Peter talked about.
