Who were we back then?

Etty. You’ll be my hero forever, if you can bring back the dancing Mike.

I know it might not be possible…

But a boy can dream…

Hi Pras! Great to see you again!

Katie here, while my initials have changed, my username has not. I don’t talk much anymore, what with the stress of work, people, and state of the world, but I do enjoy hearing everyone’s updates.

As for me, I’ve been married for 7 years, but about to celebrate 18 together. 3 cats: Davey Havok (15), Captain Butch Flowers (8), and Peter Parker(1) as well as a plethora of nieces and nephews.

I thought for certain you had a finger in this particular pie. Come on, I feel some arpeggio-ness in this return. After all, I am your biggest fan. Still.

Thanks for liking my tweets!

Hey, Mike! Wonderful to see you! Is Joanne going to join the fray? If not send her my warmest regards. Don’t tell me how old your kids are, I’m traumatised enough from ages of mine. I’m old now. When did that happen?

Perhaps someday we’ll finally meet. I know we came close at the HB2 benefit at Haw River Ballroom a few years ago. However, as luck would have it I had to cut out that afternoon because I was putting on a show with Lydia Loveless in Raleigh that evening. She was invited to attend the benefit free of charge but politely declined.

The dancing Mike? I know what you mean, but it was never mine. The emoji, right? Ask Ethan, if anybody has that it would be him. I archived some of my Mills stuff.
The Mike Mills Wakes Up warped fanfic. I think we should forget that. Anno dominos? Dominoes? Oh who knows. Time marches on.

I’ve been up there a few times! There’s a distillery I love up in Bellingham that makes everything out of apples, it’s really interesting stuff.

Hello, my name is Derek, and I am here for the badges. Please like this so that I can earn the “Nice Reply” badge. Thank you.

Bellewood Farms and Distillery. I’ve been here almost 14yrs and still haven’t been there. But Chuckanut Distillery has some damn good bourbon.

Sockpuppet then, same as now.
I lurked for a while, but came out of my shell in 2003 and met some of the most wonderful people that I’m fortunate to still call my friends.
I was a classroom teacher then, became an instructional coach, and now I’m an interventionist. It’s the best job I’ve had as an educator in my 27 year career.
It’s good to see quite a few familiar names and faces around these parts.

Well I think I just learned a lesson I didn’t want to learn. I added images at the end of my post and it deleted what I typed in. #%*€#

I am phlmth, always have been. Ex-admin at Murmurs. I ‘met’ Ethan when Murmurs was just a baby - a website sans a message board. I would reach out via email back in the day.

A met a lot of people at multiple Athfests, REM shows, even met several people at the Tibetan Freedom Concert. If I ever find the time, and so inclined, I will try to gather up some photos and post them.

Athfest: If we ever get back to normal (which I think is NEVER) hopefully those who are interested could meet up and laugh about all the years that have passed. I’m really not sure I would want to go back though because I’m sure that too much has changed.

Okay - Just to show the passage of time - for both Etty and Ethan who have met my boys - Ethan at Merriweather Post Pavilion for the Up tour and Etty and family one summer.

In the past five years pre-Covid.

Evan and I ubering our way to Hamilton.

Aron and I taking in a movie back when it was safe to actually go out to a movie theater.

Ethan - You are more than welcome to correct my memory of murmurs in its infancy.

Hello!

Pretty sure I was chasinglindsay back in the day! Lindsay from Minnesota here - super active poster for years, attendee of several Athfests, and ended up attending grad school at UGA from 2001-2003. Excited to see so many familiar names and faces!

Nowadays - still in MN, working as a clinical psychologist in the addictions field. I’ve been married for 11 years to a guy who loves REM a whole heck of a lot but was never on Murmurs. We have a 7 year old daughter, Penelope (Penny) and a 19.5 year old cat, Rufus.

Thanks Ethan for getting this back up and running! Lots of fond feelings for Murmurs.

I lurked for a while starting around 2002. I went to the other REM site prior, and was more of a regular there. Through the 2000’s i started visiting here and posting. I’ve always been djing in addition to working various real jobs. Some shitty, others reasonably fulfilling. Now i am doing resort travel. I think I’m going to do another Spring/Summer season, and then settle down or well probably not. I’m 53 so if i did not settle by now, I’m not going to. I’m currently a concierge guest services agent in Park City at a swanky hotel. where I am now. I sometimes do write poetry when the spirit moves me. I have recorded some songs with a friend. We are unable to get together due to life and scheduling, but by the end of the year hopefully we will record an album. I was always politically moderate, and the probably still am, but i feel the left has gone so off the charts that I am not with them at all. I am a rebellious politicall right leaning REM fan. I know there are more. Don’t be afraid to post on here conservative Libertarian REM fans, i will have your back.

I also am a National Karaoke legend. I have not been out singing lately here in Utah, but i’ll get out there again soon. I can sing REM very well. I sang Man on the Moon in Nashville and people were crying tears of joy.

I’m Palais1977 (Kirsten in the real world). I was a member eons ago but real life and inconsistent access to the internet were obstacles and by the time the internet access issues were gone I was a single mom of three and was happy to remember to brush my own teeth at the end of the day, let alone hang out with cool people who loved my band as much as I did. I was mostly a lurker when I was able to be online back in the day. I can’t even remember what my screen name was back then, but I guess that’s what aging, a few serious head knocks and cognitive fatigue can do to a person over time. Glad to be back, though.

Jeremy here. Originally from Kansas, now in Chicago for the past 7 years, by way of Seattle for the 7 or so before that. Not sure if I ever had a username on the original Murmurs site.

I’ve been a REM fan for 36 years, married for 22 years and a dad with two teenagers for 19. By day, I’m a Creative Director, and I still play in the same band, The Brannock Device, that I started with friends in 1995. We don’t play as often being in different cities, but still as much fun as ever when we do.

@ethank - Appreciate you bringing back this site for all the right reasons.

I’m Sarah in real life, and kohoutekdriver8 was my username on Murmurs. I joined in 2001 and stayed until the end, although for the last couple of years, for some reason I had trouble signing on. Anyway, in 2001 I was living in Davenport, IA and working at a grocery store pharmacy. I later relocated to southern Illinois, and 10 years ago this month, now living in the Missouri Ozarks, I realized that my beloved profession had mutated into something I did not recognize, so I retired from it (at the ripe old age of 47) and moved back to Davenport, which I consider my hometown even though I did not grow up there. I started a book resale business, both online and at various antique malls, and am a cat mom of Abigail, who’s sleeping on my computer table as I type this.

It’s great to see so many familiar faces! Honestly, I don’t listen to R.E.M. all that much any more; I view their music as a fond memory retreating into the background, but I’m grateful for them providing a soundtrack to many years of my life.
