Wow, considering I was still in high school when I joined Murmurs, this is the closest thing I have to time travel nowadays - not to mention a test for my memory, I read the usernames and it takes me back right away!
I’m Luis, and I joined Murmurs in 2003, around the In Time era. I’d be lying if I didn’t say that Murmurs really helped shape who I’m now, through this website I discovered a lot of great music, made a huge amount of good friends who I’m still in contact, and I’d say, even started gaining a sense of responsibility when it came time to put order in the discussion forums I hosted, haha. Having so many fond memories linked to my favourite band of all-time, well, it just cements them even more as my favourites, even 10 years after they disbanded.
I’m originally from Maracaibo, Venezuela (hola @filmdrivergirl8!) - Murmurs was always around while I did my bachelors’ in Chemical Engineering, which I completed despite all those nights up late on MSN and tending to forum trolls! After a few years working and getting a masters’s degree, I moved to the Netherlands in 2014, to do a post-masters’ programma, and it turned out to be an even more suitable home than I ever thought it’d be, since I’ve been here ever since - I even got naturalised two years ago, even if I’m not as tall as the rest of the people here. I’m living in Eindhoven, working for a semiconductors company, and hoping in general for a much more normal year this time. Going to the office 5 days a week is a thing of the past, though.
Looking forward to see what you are all up to these days!
I don’t remember the instance, but I trust you it memory.I still do similar things nowadays in the digital work world. My philosophy has always been to do for others because you can’t expect what you can’t give. Any woo. Nobody wants to hear my philosophy. But yes this is definitely Penny. And let me just say I remember you. I remember DriverNate. Please don’t tell me I’m delusional. So good to ‘see’ you.
I was Sousa, from Portugal, back then. Finished my degree, got married, had At My Most Beautiful played at my wedding, my two boys borned and were named after the bands members (translated to Portuguese) one is João Miguel (John Michael) and the other is Pedro Guilherme (Peter William). Am a dentist now and every single day my patients listen to R.E.M.
I was gcomas then and now also. I don’t remember when I joined but I do remember browsing the site during the recordings of Reveal. In those days was when I first saw R.E.M. live: January 17th, 2001.
I was a fanclub member and I remember the postcards they sent out, some of them with photos from Buenos Aires (I am from Argentina). I also got to attend the second show in Argentina (2008).
In those days I was married with no children and now I am still married, but I have three children. Girl 1 (19 years old), Girl 2 (16 years old), Boy 1 (12 years old).
I spent SO much time reading rec.music.rem! I still think about it often, but didn’t know it was now a Google Group. Fond memories of that time, as well as Murmurs.
Ah, if you went to a Posies show at that time, I was most likely there. Too bad I didn’t know you were there, too. It’s not like you had/have any idea who I am, but I would have bought you a drink or dinner out of appreciation for Murmurs.
A friend of mine and her husband signed the register to At my most beautiful. Needless to say, that was the moment during the ceremony when I started bawling. When I told her afterwards, she started laughing and said that when it started playing her first thought wasn’t of being in the middle of getting married to that amazing man, it was that I was probably approving.
I saw Ethan’s Tweet earlier in the day and now after logging in, my memory is jump-kicking in.
I don’t recall my username but went with my gut - Willis, a college nickname. I joined the boards in '99 around the Up tour and was active till '03/'04.
Anyway, I’m Mark, originally from Ohio, have spent time in WV, Michigan, and have been living in Germany for the past 2 years.
I’m not sure I remember how to use this format. I seem to be still IntheCorner. When did I join? 2003 I think. Mostly active in the Tractor Bar and Bill Poems. I was a school librarian, and now a (VERY) happily retired school librarian keeping busy with training my dog, raising chickens (17 at last count), and dealing with my old-ass husband. Nice to see some familiar handles popping up here.
Hi Leigh! Good to “meet” you again! Such an amazing surprise to be back in Murmurs, but maybe a good thing for my employer that I’m no longer working at home!
Hope all is good with you and the boys.
I’m sure I’ve mentioned this before on FB but I believe back in Murmurs days you mentioned that you’d heard Drive By Truckers on John Peel’s show on the BBC. I believe that was around the time I first started getting into them, perhaps later. It’s hard to remember when exactly.
Well, back then I was a smidge older than you but totally new to this. REM became a part of my life when my brother wanted to improve my musical taste when I was about 14. Within a month I had bought everything I could. Now I have a 16 year old daughter who has unreasonably good taste in music (including REM thankfully) and an 11 year old son who seems currently less than persuaded - work to do!
I made a gmail search (I don’t delete anything) to see who I was back then and I found a direct message from you, haha. It was regarding the hidden tracks in Murmur and Reckoning Anniversary releases.
